Ophelia is new at school when Hamlet immediately catches her attention. He is strangely withdrawn, constantly absorbed in dark thoughts, and enjoys provoking others with his elaborate, poetic language. Yet Ophelia is fascinated by him, especially by his thoughts about feeling lost in a world full of possibilities and by his nagging doubts about the meaning of existence. The two fall in love, but keep their relationship a secret.
Then, completely unexpectedly, Hamlet’s father dies. From one day to the next, Hamlet seems to change. He becomes darker, more withdrawn, and increasingly fatalistic. A terrible suspicion begins to take hold of him: what if his mother and uncle were somehow involved in his father’s death? What if they killed him to gain something for themselves?
